Two jobs, often mixed up
There are two parts to picking a niche.
Discovery means finding niches you hadn't thought of. Tools like NexLev, TubeLab and vidIQ search large databases of channels for this. YouTubePilot doesn't. It has no database of every channel on YouTube.
Checking means taking a niche you're considering and finding out what is happening in it right now. That is where YouTubePilot helps. You pick the channels that define the niche, and it shows what they post, what breaks out and what nobody has covered.
If you already have a shortlist, or you are a few videos in and unsure, checking is the step that matters.
What to check in a niche
- Is it active? Are the channels still uploading every week? A niche where everyone stopped is not a niche.
- How often do videos break out? Count videos at 2× or more of their channel's usual views in the last 30 days. Frequent breakouts mean the audience is still hungry.
- Who wins? If only the biggest channel breaks out, it is hard to get in. If small channels break out too, there is room.
- What repeats? Topics and formats that keep working are the core of the niche.
- What is missing? Topics viewers respond to that few channels have covered fully. That is your way in.
Revenue figures matter too, but YouTubePilot doesn't estimate RPM or earnings. Estimates from any tool are guesses. Check them against creators who share real numbers.
How to check a niche with YouTubePilot
- Add your channel. The tool compares the niche with what you've already made.
- Add 3 to 10 channels that define the niche. YouTubePilot suggests channels from your niche and tags them by size, so you can include a few near your size.
- Read the first report. The Overview shows uploads, breakouts and open gaps. The Gaps view lists topics by opportunity. The outlier finder shows which videos beat their channel's normal.

Setup asks for your channel first. If you have no channel in the niche yet, you can enter a channel you want to model. The gaps then read as "topics this channel hasn't covered yet".
Reading the result
A good sign: several channels, including smaller ones, broke out in the last month, on more than one topic, and there are gaps rated high. A warning sign: one channel takes all the breakouts, or every topic is already covered three times over.
For scale: in one AI-tools niche, YouTubePilot tracked 43 uploads over 14 days. Eight were breakouts at 2× or more, and 10 topics were open as gaps. That is a niche with room. A niche with the same number of uploads and no breakouts would tell a different story.
One report is a snapshot. A niche looks clearer after a few weeks of updates, when you can see whether the breakouts keep coming.
