Find the content gaps in your YouTube niche

A content gap is a topic your competitors cover, their viewers respond to, and you haven't made. YouTubePilot finds them by comparing what your competitors said with what you've already made.

What a content gap is

Your viewers watch other channels too. When those channels keep covering a topic and you never do, your viewers learn about it somewhere else. That is a gap.

Gaps come in two kinds:

  • Full gaps. Competitors made whole videos on it. You have nothing.
  • Mention-only gaps. You touched on it in passing, but never gave it a proper video.

Mention-only gaps are easy to miss and often the easiest to fill. Your viewers already know you know the subject.

How to find gaps by hand

  1. List your competitors' last 20 to 30 videos.
  2. Write down the topics in each one.
  3. Do the same for your own channel.
  4. Mark every topic that shows up on two or more competitor channels and not on yours.
  5. Check how those videos did against each channel's usual views.

The catch is step 2. Titles hide most topics. A video called "OpenAI COOKED" can cover four different products. To see the real topics, you have to watch the videos, or read them.

How YouTubePilot finds gaps

YouTubePilot reads the transcripts of your competitors' recent videos and your own. It pulls out the topics, then compares the two sides. For each gap it shows:

  • Competitors. Which channels covered it, such as 3 of 3.
  • Your coverage. None, or mention only.
  • Opportunity. High, medium or low, based on how many channels covered it and how those videos did.
  • Why it's a gap. Short lines with the numbers, such as "Nate Herk's two model-comparison uploads each reached 2.0× their channel norm."
  • What they said. Quotes from the transcripts, each with a timestamp.

An example

Here is a real case from an AI-tools channel in October 2026. All three competitors covered Claude Sonnet 5.5. Two of Nate Herk's comparison videos reached 2.0× his usual views. The creator had no video on it. That is a high-opportunity gap. Further down the same list, "AI 3D world generation" was covered by two competitors, and the creator had only mentioned it. That is a mention-only gap: smaller, but quick to fill, because viewers have already heard the creator bring it up.

From gap to video

A gap is a topic, not yet a video. Click "Turn into idea" and YouTubePilot frames it as a video for your channel, with the evidence attached. From an idea, "Create brief" gives you a title, a hook, an outline, and a list of what the existing videos missed, so your version adds something.

You can also ask about any gap in Ask: "What did they say about this, and what did nobody explain?" The answer cites the exact moments.

Not every gap is worth filling

Skip a gap when:

  • it doesn't fit your channel, even if competitors cover it;
  • it was one-off news that is already old;
  • the competitor videos on it did worse than usual.

Gaps work best next to the other signals. A gap that also has an outlier behind it is usually your strongest next video. For the full process, see finding YouTube video ideas.

Questions

What is a content gap on YouTube?

A topic your competitors cover and their viewers respond to, that you haven't made a video on, or only mentioned in passing.

Why use transcripts instead of titles?

Titles hide most topics. One video can cover several subjects its title never names. Transcripts show what was actually said.

How many competitors do I need for gap analysis?

Three is the minimum that makes patterns visible. A topic covered by 2 of 3 or 3 of 3 channels is a stronger gap than one covered by a single channel.

Does it check my own videos too?

Yes. It reads your recent uploads so it knows what you've covered fully, in passing, or not at all.

How often are gaps updated?

Every time your workspace updates: weekly on Starter, daily on Creator, every 6 hours on Studio. The free plan is one full report.
